The Rising Sun, Rogerstone is an ideal place for a family night out.

With a childrens' play area, outside seating and a pool table set on the ground floor of the conservatory extension, there is plenty to keep the youngsters entertained while the adults enjoy a drink or two in the beer garden.

The conservatory first floor extension provides great view for dinners and is renowned for its Sunday lunches.

The mid-week menu, although extensive, did not provide much of a choice for fish lovers.

I had the prawns in filo pastry and chilli dip (4.50) to start and my partner had the wings of fire, spicy chicken wings (4.95).

Both were ok, but were the only options from a limited and uninspiring bunch.

For the mains course I had the salmon in a creamy and leek sauce (9.95) which was delicious, but was let down by the mushy vegetables that accompanied it.

My partner had gammon and chips (8.95) which he said was melt-in-the-mouth, not over-cooked as directed and well presented.

The prompt service could not be faulted.

With drinks the meal came to £37.61.
