NEXT week is national breakfast week and – as if we really needed another reason for a fry-up – here it is.

With the help of Argus readers we have put together a list of some of the best places to dine out for breakfast in and around Newport.

From the traditional cooked breakfast with all the trimmings to a breakfast pizza (what could be better?), we really do have it all in Newport.

So put your bowl of cereal to shame and start the day off the best way with some of these beauties.

1. Parc Pantry: Coffee shop in Larch Grove, Malpas and tea rooms in Bellevue Park’s Victorian Pavilion.

South Wales Argus: FRUITY: Super berry pot at Parc Pantry

The breakfast toastie here has got such a following, it is now called “The” breakfast toastie. It is gloriously packed with bacon, emmental cheese, chorizo and tomato chilli chutney – all for the very reasonable price of £3.40.

Other hits at the Pantry – which you’ll soon be calling it after your fifth visit in a row – include its pancake stack and chorizo hash, a bagel with chorizo, sausage, bacon and a herbed fried egg.

New for January is its healthier special super berry breakfast pots. Delicious. See parcpantry.co.uk or @ParcPantry @PantryTeaRooms

2. Cedars. Skinner Street, Newport.

South Wales Argus: HEARTY: Breakfast at Cedars

We asked, and you delivered – Cedars was a popular choice when we asked for readers’ best recommendations.

Described as “mouth-watering and cheap”, Cedars has meat, vegetarian and vegan cooked breakfasts for just £4.95.

Owner Josephine Roberts said the breakfasts are “very, very popular” and can be ordered throughout the day.

The vegan version has some of the best fry-up components but with spinach and toast with peanut butter.

“Everything is grilled and quite healthy,” Ms Roberts said. “And it’s as good value as possible.”

3. Drago Lounge. Friars Walk shopping centre.

South Wales Argus:

The newly-opened Drago Lounge, part of company Loungers which has branches all over the country, has a long brunch menu.

Stand-out highlights include the avocado brunch for £6.95, bubble and squeak for £5.95 and the chimichurri field mushrooms for £6.95.

Sam Chapman, assistant manager, said brunches are served all day and the most popular is their take on the fry up – the lounge breakfast.

As cooked breakfasts go, it looks quite hip and comes with a sausage pattie which is always a welcome treat.

And another bonus of Drago, eating-in means you can have a look at its mural in memory of the Chartist uprising.

4 Valentine’s. Chepstow Road.

South Wales Argus:

Everything at Valentine’s is authentically Turkish, right down to the toilets which were imported.

This breakfast is absolutely delicious and will make you re-think everything you held dear about breakfast.

Lentil soup with special Turkish chilli powder to start the day? Why not? It’s tasty.

Other highlights the restaurant offers include Turkish tea, freshly-made Turkish bread with sesame black seeds and halal salami and eggs in olive oil.

You can also order an amazing platter of halal salami, yoghurt, honey and cream, a selection of cheeses including halloumi and feta and olives.

It set Argus photographer Chris Tinsley up for the day – “five out of five,” he said.

5. The Café at Ridgeway. Allt-yr-yn Avenue.

South Wales Argus: DELICIOUS: Bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese, Cafe at Ridgeway

Beautifully presented, this was another choice shouted out when we asked for Newport’s best breakfast.

The café only opened last year, but staff said 2016 is looking to be a good one with more products and events and private parties.

It is hard to believe the café used to be public toilets.

Happy customers report the quality of the food is “first-class” with beautiful views.

The bacon rolls and toasted bagels are simple breakfast meals done exceptionally well.

The most popular breakfast choice? Toasted bagel with cream cheese and crispy bacon.

6. Fanny’s café. Alexandra Road.

South Wales Argus:

By the Newport transporter bridge, this café’s breakfasts were voted best breakfast of the year by Voice magazine for three years running, then it was crowned café of the year.

Owner Jo Evans-Pring said the cafe is “always popular”.

The breakfast roll is a hit – for £2.60 you get bacon, sausage, egg, black pudding and beans – and there are also well-priced cooked breakfasts.

The £4.95 mega-breakfast could keep you going for days with a jumbo sausage, two eggs, black pudding, beans, two bacon, mushrooms, fried bread, two toast, tomatoes and tea and coffee.

7. The Secret Garden Café. Charles Street.

South Wales Argus: POPULAR: The Newporter breakfast at Secret Garden Cafe

The king of food porn, these breakfasts look unbelievable.

Everything is handmade in-house every day and there is a regular changing list of specials.

The Newporter is their take on the New Yorker – you get thick granary bread, eggs, shredded crispy bacon and tomatoes cooked on the vine.

It’s all doused in “Phil’s special sauce” – a spicy house salsa.

“You’re not a true Newporter until you’ve tried this breakfast,” Cllr Chris Evans said.

The Secret Garden was mentioned a lot when we asked for your recommendations.

And the best thing about this café?

It’s a gift that keeps on giving with a fantastic selection of snacks and lunchtime meals throughout the day.

8. Sawyers Bar and Grill. Wales One Business Park, Newport Road, Magor.

South Wales Argus: CHOICE: Brunch at Sawyers, including the breakfast pizza

Although not strictly in the city, this is well known by many in Newport – especially for its breakfasts.

If Sawyers was a piece of music, it would be an Ode to the Breakfast.

Served weekdays from 9am to 12pm and weekends until 3pm, this American-style diner has classics including steak and eggs, omelettes, smoked sausage hash, peppered mackerel and French toast.

It is also known for its more novel option – the breakfast pizza.

For £8.60 you get tomato sauce, sausages, mushrooms, bacon, cheese and topped with a fried egg.

General manager Kirsty Clark said: “It’s popular, especially with those who want it after the night before.”

To celebrate national breakfast week next week, Sawyers has a special pancake challenge to eat a whole stack in 10 minutes.

9. Bar Piazza. John Frost Square.

South Wales Argus: SWEET: Pancakes at Bar Piazza

This Italian coffee shop and delicatessen has got rave reviews – “fab food and service!” and “amazing people, so friendly and helpful”.

One of its highlights is the – wait for it – bacon-wrapped sausage in a ciabatta.

What could be better than a giant pig in blanket in a roll for breakfast?

Other highlights on the breakfast menu, which is available until 11am, include buttermilk vanilla pancakes with a choice of toppings and a selection of pastries.

The drinks are also a hit with thick fruit smoothies, milkshakes, hot chocolates and of course coffees.

10. The Ridgeway Bar and Kitchen. Ridgeway Avenue.

South Wales Argus: TREAT: Breakfast at the Ridgeway Bar and Kitchen

Classic breakfasts are on the menu here – think eggs benedict, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and French toast.

The £4.25 Welsh pork and leek sausage or Welsh cured bacon in a toasted brioche roll is a posher take on your bacon butty, and the £7.75 full Welsh cooked breakfast is also a treat.

You get two rashers of Welsh cured bacon, one Welsh pork and leek sausage, one black pudding ring, flat mushroom, grilled tomato, baked beans and choice of egg.

It is also great to see a bloody Mary cocktail on the menu for the hair of the dog.

Owner David Pell said: “Your traditional cooked breakfast is always going to do very well.

"People come in for all sorts.”
