We have a labrador duo for you this week in the shape of Coco, a beautiful young labrador mix, and her adorable puppy Missy who were both handed over to Newport City Dogs Home by their owner.

Coco is hardly more than a baby herself. It’s likely she was mated in her first season, and so she has been doing her best to take of her six puppies since November in a small flat.

Coco seems absolutely thrilled to be released from her maternal duties, and she had a fabulous time kicking up her heels in the garden with the volunteers. Missy, Coco’s pup, was born in November 2016, so is just five-months-old. She hasn’t had the best start in life, has lived with her mum and siblings in a small flat, and hasn’t experienced all the joys of puppyhood. She had never been walked on lead (staff are not sure whether she has ever actually been outside), and her general body condition isn’t great. She has a swollen tummy - but staff say hopefully a dose of wormers will make her feel a lot more comfortable, and she hasn’t built up any muscle mass yet. She is a bit flabby, but once she starts to kick up her puppy heels we’re pretty sure she will look and feel like a different dog.

Since arriving at the home, both girls have come on leaps and bounds. Coco is starting to relax now she doesn’t have young puppies to look after, and Missy is gaining in confidence every day.

The staff will be looking for separate homes for the girls and if you’d like to meet them please call 01633 290 902 between 11am - 1pm or 2pm - 4pm, Monday to Saturday or pop in for a visit.

Rehoming fees are from £100 - £200 depending on the age/breed of the dog, and includes the first vaccination, flea and worm treatment, and microchip. It is a condition of the rehoming contract that all dogs are neutered/spayed.All applicants will be homechecked prior to approval.
