Andy Howells chats to Lights the Canadian electro-rock-pop artist Lightsahead of her headlining the Thekla in Bristol on January 24, 2015.

Lights latest album Little Machines ihas been described as "a gleaming, groundbreaking, generously tuneful slab of brightly hued 21st-century techno-pop brimming with songs so immediate and timelessly pure of heart that they feel like old friends on delivery". It follows Lights last release 2011’s

Siberia a strikingly ambitious sophomore LP that turned many a head by introducing layers of synthetic dissonance and juddering dubstep bass into her signature, sweetly melodic electro-pop sound.

How did you first start in music?

. I first started producing my own songs when I was thirteen and bought my first 8-track digital mixing console. From there I fell in love with the power to create something I loved out of nothing.

Where are you from?

I currently live on the west coast of Canada, but was born in northern Ontario. Moved around a lot my whole life so there are a lot of places I call home, Timmins, North Bay, Toronto, Manila (Philippines), and Vancouver.

How would you describe your music style?

I like to describe it as classic electronic, especially with Little Machines, the new record. I put a lot of emphasis on writing a good song that can stand the test of time but dressed in interesting electronic production built with vintage synths and some live instrumentation.

What’s been your best live experience?

The best live experiences are the smaller rooms where fans are shoulder to shoulder and you're right there with them. It's sweaty and gross and feels so much like how a show should be.

You've just released a new record can you tell us more about that?

Little Machines! It was a labour of love really, took some writer’s block and a pregnancy to really refocus my passion for what I do. In the end I just kind of threw away all the dumb stuff I used to worry about and made songs I really enjoy singing and playing. That's the whole point at the end of the day. Songs are all really feel good and anthemic.

You’re touring the UK shortly are you looking forward to that?

Yeah we can't wait to get back there. It's been a couple years since we've toured around those parts and the shows are always so quality. And I love Wetherspoon's! White zinfandel on tap, like what?

What can people expect from your forthcoming Bristol gig?

Singalongs and big bass.

Will you be coming to Wales sometime in the future?

Definitely. We usually hit up Cardiff, not sure why it wasn't on the list this time around but I'm sure we'll be back. Cardiff is nuts!

Where can people hear your music?

www.iamlights.com for all the deets. And for my personal ramblings my twitter and insta are all @lights.
