It’s difficult to decide who enjoyed the gig more, Paul Carrack or an enthusiastic Cardiff audience for whom this man could do no wrong.

He doesn’t need words, and from the moment he took the stage he launched straight into a huge 22 number set that still left the audience asking for more.

Over forty years in the business has given this unassuming legend a multitude of material to choose from and his ability to change mood and tempo at will places few restraints on what he delivers.

Starting with Satisfy My Soul , When You Walk in the Room, One in a Million through to Another Cup of Cofee from the Mike and the Mechanics years and on to beautiful keyboard ballad, Eyes of Blue, it became clear that we were in for a roller-coaster ride through those years.

Backed by a tight six-piece band of keyboard, bass, sax, guitar and two sets of drums, Carrack was more than happy to share the accolades, and frequently gave them reign to shine. Sax, bass and guitar took centre stage on Time Waits for No-One and the vocals were generously shared on the upbeat Make Your Mind Up.

Tempted from his Squeeze years raised an enormous cheer whilst Springsteen’s If I Should Fall Behind and a soulful cover of Brenda Lee’s I’m Losing You showed him in yet another light.

Touchingly respectful to his audience, this man is equally well-respected by fellow musicians - it’s clear why.
