Set in a retirement home for aged actresses, one of Noel Coward’s later plays, Waiting in the Wings was dismissed by critics of its time. Fifty-five years on, and in the capable hands of director, Christopher Bissex-Williams it proved a triumph for Newport Playgoers Society.

Full of sensitivity and humour, the play focuses on a group of retired actresses who now reside together in ‘The Wings’ a charitable, retirement home.

The magic of this production is in the way our leading ladies bond and inter-act, their years of experience contributing in no short measure to its success.

The feud between old rivals, May Davenport and Lotta Bainbridge takes centre stage with Pam Elliot and Sandra Hourahine shining in two important roles. Their initial hostility which eventually turns to friendship being an absolute joy to watch.

Moira Mainwaring gives a wonderfully comedic performance as, no-nonsense Deidre O’Malley and Jeanette Massocchi shows great versatility as Maud Melrose.

A special mention must be made of Anthony Broome, playing the devoted Osgood Meeker with grace and sensitivity while Phil Lee-Thomas plays the debonair Perry Lascoe with panache, showing concern and affection for all the ladies under his wing.

A well-crafted, visually stunning 1950s set provides the perfect backdrop to a charming evening of theatre.
