ANDREW Lloyd-Webber's musical Phantom of the Opera has been running for 30 years in the West End and is a big production to come the stage of The Dolman Theatre in Newport.

Young Venture Players, however, did not let this overawe them and wowed the audience with their rendition of the musical.

The Phantom, Joe Whittington, was exceptional in his role in displaying his vindictive character. Only knowing hardship, The Phantom demands complete control of the opera and attempts to take Christine Daaé for his own through force.

Josie Ash was on fine form as Christine, a frightened but talented singer. Her duets with The Phantom and also Raoul (Harrison Smith) were a delight to watch and are ones to look out for.

Ruby Davies portrayal of her spirited and vivacious character (Carlotta) was spot-on.

The cast as a whole were fantastic and it’s obvious that a lot of hard work has been brought into the show; it definitely pays off!

The sets and special effects were also on trend and only added to the magic of the performance.

For me, the combination of the orchestra and vocals were the best part of the show.

This musical is full of drama, passion and vengeance.

The show continues until Saturday and shouldn’t be missed.
