FANS of celebrated US songwriter John Grant got what they came for at Wales Millennium Centre.

Shuffling on stage in semi darkness, he delved into his growing catalogue with vulnerability, wry humour and infectious dancing.

The former frontman of struggling alt-country outfit Czars, Grant is now riding high following a trio of acclaimed later-life solo albums. The most recent, Grey Tickles Black Pressure, made up the bulk of the set in Cardiff. And it's a record that sees the introspective figure largely trade in the trademark gloom for jittery twisted pop.

His current backing band supplied echoey synths and pounding beats that brought the icy electronica of show standout Pale Green Ghosts thumping to life.

But of course Grant's booming baritone – a voice that filled the cavernous hall for the aching Glacier – was the greatest instrument on stage.

It's little wonder he was asked to do this show for the capital's Festival of Voice, which sees all forms of vocal expression celebrated. Grant made a major contribution to the Land of Song on Thursday night.

The Colorado native has had a soft spot for Wales for some time, filming numerous music videos here. “It's the centre of the universe,” he told the delighted crowd.
