HAVING seen Les Miserables in the West End and Bristol it is difficult to imagine a school production would be as good.

This show by pupils from King Henry V111 Comprehensive School, Abergavenny did not disappoint, indeed in some aspects it surpassed the professional production because of the enthusiasm and talent. At times it was difficult to remember the cast were all children.

Steele Quinnell was magnificent as Valjean, freed from chains after 19 years in prison for stealing bread, and his commanding stage presence and powerful voice deserved the rapturous applause. Kieran Moss was excellent as his pursuer Javert and Ben Baker and Millie Francis were perfectly cast as the star-struck lovers Marius and Cosette. Diminutive Emily James has a wonderful voice that belies her size so she was perfect as Eponine who loves Marius. Little Shaun Edwards made an impressive debut as the urchin Gavroche and there were memorable performances from Kerrigan Heffernan, Chloe Thomas and Ella Griffiths.

But the loudest audience reaction was reserved for the comic duo the Thenardiers, played by Matthew Jones and Meg Trinder. Their perfect timing lifted the mood of the production and Master Of The House literally brought the house down.

What a superb shop. No wonder the three nights were completely sold out.
