The Sleeping Beauty, Bristol Hippodrome

THE Russian State Ballet of Siberia certainly pulled in the crowds for its interpretation of The Sleeping Beauty at Bristol Hippodrome on Monday night.

The theatre was almost full for the weeknight performance with an audience no doubt drawn in by the finesse and professionalism associated with Russian ballet companies.

The show was enjoyable from start to finish, and the dancing accompanied by a fantastic orchestra masterfully performing Tchaikovsky’s score. Princess Aurora, danced by Maria Kuimova, and her Prince played by Arkady Zinov, made a beautiful pairing after he awakened her with his kiss, and Natalya Goroshko’s Lilac Fairy lit up the stage before the interval as she tried to protect the baby Princess from the Evil Fairy Carabosse.

The candy-coloured costumes looked as if they could have been left over from panto season, and some lacklustre group dances in the first half struggled to hold the audience’s attention but the evening ended on a high.

The fun choreography danced by fairytale characters such as Little Red Riding Hood and Puss-in-Boots at the Prince and Princesses’ wedding raised more than a few laughs from the stalls.
