An acclaimed one-man play comes to the Borough Theatre on February 8 before heading for an off-Broadway run later in the year.

A Regular Little Houdini, written and performed by Newport actor Daniel Llewelyn-Williams, is a coming of age story about a lowly dockworker's son who dreams of becoming a magician like his hero Harry Houdini. His parents struggle with their son’s eccentricity, but his relentless ambition finally brings him face to face with the world’s greatest showman – and one of the most terrifying events in British industrial history. The play is based on true events and set in Newport at the turn of last century, when the great showman and escapologist Houdini came to Newport.

Actor Daniel Llewelyn-Williams confesses to not being an expert on magic before embarking on this project: “I had no previous knowledge of magic but I’ve become a bit of an aficionado for this play. The main character sleeps with The Houdini Book of Magic under his pillow, carrying it with him everywhere, so I’ve had to pretty much do the same thing to tap into that obsession.”

Llewelyn-Williams won Best Actor at the Welsh Theatre Awards in 2015 for his portrayal of Siegfried Sassoon in Clwyd Theatr Cymru’s production of Not About Heroes and will be recognised from his regular appearances as a doctor on EastEnders.
