Set in spectacular scenery, the Horseshoe Inn in Mamhilad is a smart eatery with stylish decor.
With its kitchen team led by Kurt Flemming, ex-Head Chef at the Bell Inn in Skenfrith, its culinary pedigree should be of the highest order. And it doesn't disappoint.
The Sunday my partner and I went for lunch the place was full of expectant diners feeling the benefit of the roaring real fires.
I started with cream of roasted vegetable & rocket soup and what a delight it was. The slightly charred flavour of the vegetables paired nicely with the peppery rocket. My partner's haddock & spring onion fishcake with tomato butter sauce was a joy to behold. The cake was nicely moist with each flavour complementing the other.
For mains, the roast leg of Gloucester Old Spot pork hit the, erm, spot. The meat was juicy and cooked to a tee. The crackling was toothsome and crisp and the gravy was bursting with meaty juices.
The lamb, however, pipped the pork, fine though it was. Deliciously pink, the meat was wonderfully tender and altogether was rather heavenly. The garlic mash was the perfect foil for the new season lamb as was the minted jus. All in, a winning combination.
Service was attentive and friendly throughout and the bill came to £35.75 for two courses each and drinks.
