BIZET'S popular opera was an ambitious production for an amateur company to take on.
But, with the introduction of some more experienced singers, the Lyric Musical Society mainly rose to the challenge.
Although some may prefer it in the original language, the decision to perform it here in English was probably the right choice as it made it more accessible.
The love story featuring the gypsy Carmen and the tormented Don Jose played out to its tragic climax set to the familiar and stirring music.
Carmen was portrayed by Anne Braley, who has sung with opera companies throughout the UK, while Iestyn Morris ably took on the dual role of Don Jose and director.
Jennifer Walker's beautiful voice helped her to shine as the soldier's rejected love, the innocent Michaela.
Aled Powys Williams and Matthew Ibbotsen added some welcome light relief as the smugglers. Victoria Robinson and Angela Durant also gave notable performances.
John Sadler was suitably magnificent as bullfighter Escamillo and the Toreador Song was one of the highlights of the evening.
Special mention must be made of children from St Julian's Junior School for their appealing contribution.
