Newport night-spot applies for 4am licence

THE owner of Newport's best-known nightspot wants to sell alcohol and stage music until 4am on Fridays and Saturdays.

TJ's on Clarence Place opened in 1971 and has welcomed a plethora of world-renowned acts through its doors.

The list includes bands such as Oasis, Primal Scream, the Manic Street Preachers, Green Day, Supergrass and The Cranberries.

Currently it is allowed to sell alcohol until 1am between Monday and Thursday and until 2am on Friday and Saturday. It is licensed until 12.30am on a Sunday.

But now owner John Sicolo wants to sell alcohol and provide regulated entertainment and music until 3am Monday to Thursday, 4am on Friday and Saturday and 2am on a Sunday.

He has applied to Newport City Council's sub-licensing committee to make the changes to his current licence.

His application will be discussed at the next meeting of the committee at the civic centre on April 1.

The club wqas given the title 'legendary' by the late Radio One DJ John Peel and is alleged to have been the place where Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain proposed to Courtney Love.

It was featured in the December 1997 issue of FHM as one of the top 50 big nights out in the world.

TJ's features live bands througout the week and weekend as well as open mike nights and a Battle of the Bands involving up and coming musical talent from the area.

I used to go to the club regularly in the 70s and call in now and again - John is in complete control if any trouble - give him the licence!

Tj"s is about music not booze so let it open late.

Totally aggree with the above comments. Yes, people get drunk in there, but the trouble in there is next to nothing. The booze is incidental - not the #1 reason or people going there

John is a local icon and is committed to the regeneration programme in our city - grant the licence!

I agree John has always been in control. Basically, he stands no messing around, and if anybody kicks off, he personally will kick them out of the place!!!

Oooo what a place... I have fab memories of great nights out there!!!

TJ's is sound as a pound. If anyone deserves a 4am license it's Big John.

Why extend the booze license? The musical entertainment license should be sufficient if thats what people go there for...

Why would people want to be drinking until 4am on a week night when the vast majority of drinking age should be in work or university the following day???

Friday and Saturday aren't questionable at all, but the other days are...

Also, given that the neighbouring areas are currently being developed into residential properties, is an extra-late license really going to be unopposed?? The developers will certainly object - given how much weight developers carry with the council, I can't see this realistically happening...

Great advert for the new flats that are going to be built in the old art college.

And change the name from TJ's to 'Gwent J's'

Define how having a 4:00am drinking license is regenerating Newport?

Define how this will beneift the proposed Flats in the old Art Collegue, and the current flats and house's next to Tj's and how it won't devalue them?

Answer clearly and consructively, away from this crowded paragraph for clarity.. Without resorting to insults, or saying "I like drinking that means everyone must like drinking" - if it's about the music not the drinking why they need a 10:00am drink license?
