Building society to offer Gwent-only mortgages

MORTGAGES from a Newport-based building society are only to be offered to locals, as a result of the credit crunch.

Monmouthshire Building Society says tighter restrictions by larger lenders have triggered a recent flood of applications from across the UK.

Now, in a bid to maintain service standards, they are temporarily restricting lending to locals.

Chief executive of Monmouthshire Building Society, Andrew Lewis, said: "We are temporarily not accepting applications from mortgage introducers.

"We are still however considering applications made by local customers in person.

"We believe this will be a temporary measure."

The building society is one of five across the UK to restrict lending to locals, after being inundated by would-be customers after larger lenders tightened lending criteria and raised mortgage rates.

But Monmouthshire Building Society stressed they were not adversely affected by the credit crunch themselves, as most of their business is funded by savings deposits, not wholesale markets.

Classic Argus "Gwent-only"? It doesn't say that anywhere even it were possible to define what was meant by "Gwent".

Yeah it does seem like the record is stuck. Same thing every post.

what was meant by "Gwent".

Easy, settle this once and for all. According to the post office Gwent is anywhere with an NP postcode ( I know this includes tiny bits of Gloucestershire, so what)

I always understood that the ancient area of Gwent lies between the rivers Wye and Usk.I used to live in the Blackpool area which is known as the Fylde, but not in an official way so can we put this "gwent" issue to rest.

...Gwent is a 'Protected County' under the Act that created the unitary authorities and encompasses Newport, Torfaen, Monmouthshire, Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent......
Owain is one of those who haven't moved with the times and wants the clock rolled back to when Newport was in Monmouthshire.

I like Gwent. I find gwentish women attracctive and I think that gwentile attitudes are far to negative.
