    1000 homes lose power

MORE THAN 1,000 city homes were left without power yesterday after a lorry hit an overhead cable in St Brides.

Power cuts at around 2.15pm also affected the Royal Gwent Hospital and St Woolos Hospital, which had to transfer to their emergency back-up generators.

The lorry hit the overhead cable in Ty Mawr, St Brides, shortly after 2pm.

Around 1,050 homes were cut off, although most were reconnected within an hour.

Fifty customers were cut off for about two hours and 20 were still without power at 5pm.

It was hoped all homes would be reconnected by 6pm.

Western Power Distribution engineers were working to repair the cable throughout the afternoon.
