Miners' champion dies
A FORMER miner who played a vital role in winning millions of pounds in compensation for Gwent pitmen with chest disease has died from cancer at the age of 59.
Alun Davies was branch secretary of the National Association of Colliery Overmen, Deputies and Shotfirers (NACODS), and later South Wales president of NACODS.
Mr Davies worked at Maerdy colliery and when it closed he became full time Assistant General Secretary for the South Wales branch of NACODS.
It was in this role that Mr Davies became a driving force behind what was to become the biggest personal injury compensation case in world history.
Around £34 million has been paid out to ex-pitmen and their families in Gwent.
Mr Davies died on March 15.
