Decision time for Charvis
Dragons captain Colin Charvis
Dragons captain Colin Charvis

NEWPORT Gwent Dragons captain Colin Charvis, Wales' most capped forward and the joint leading try scoring forward in international rugby, is set to decide on his rugby playing future this weekend.

Sunday's crunch Magners League game against Glasgow at Rodney Parade will decide whether 35-year-old Charvis has a future in the game.

He has been suffering from a knee injury which has proved difficult to shake off, only the third major setback in his career, and he returns for the second time on Sunday.

If he suffers no ill effects against the Scottish team, Charvis will at least consider playing on, but if he aggravates the problem and faces a further lay-off, the chances are he will quit.

"I thought it was the end, but I have worked hard with the medical staff to get back so it's one step at a time and I'll find out on Sunday whether this 35-year-old knee can still play professional rugby," said Charvis.

"A lot of players have worse injuries than me, I've been very lucky and I've only missed two long periods with injury. But I haven't made any decision about my future yet."

Charvis has been the kind of talismanic figure for the Dragons over the past two seasons that they are now looking for in New Zealand to help them into a new era in a redeveloped stadium.

Coach Paul Turner hopes he will carry on. "Colin has been great for us since he joined. It's been a difficult season for him with the World Cup and the injury after that, but we'll sit down and talk when he's ready," he said.

Charvis won his 94th cap during the World Cup, but has not been used by Warren Gatland since he became coach though he has said he will keep him in mind.

Charvis supplied comments for the BBC during the Six Nations. "I've been very fortunate to have five free tickets for five international games and we won them all," he said.

"It's always good to be around the team, I enjoy watching them and them being successful. My passion is rugby so somehow I'll be around rugby."

Dragons assistant coaches Leigh Jones (forwards) and Dai Rees (backs) have both signed two-year extensions to their contracts.

"Leigh and Dai's coaching credentials are well known and they are part of a strong coaching team able to go forward and develop," said chief executive Gethin Jenkins.

The Dragons have had mixed fortunes with their team to face Glasgow with Charvis, Rhys Thomas and Luke Charteris returning, but Ceri Sweeney and Richard Parks both out, Parks with a recurrence of his knee injury and Sweeney with continuing shoulder problems.

In addition loose head prop Adam Black needs a fitness test tomorrow morning and with Hugh Gustafson out with more back trouble, Newport captain Dai Pattison stands by.

Aled Thomas is at outside half and Jamie Ringer at openside with Charvis at number eight and Michael Owen confined to the bench.

Team: K Morgan, G Wyatt, R Davies, A Smith, R Fussell, A Thomas, A Williams, A Black/D Pattison, S Jones, R Thomas, A Jones, L Charteris, J Bearman, C Charvis (captain), J Ringer. Replacements: B Daly, G Robinson/A N Other, P Sidoli, M Owen, P Emerick, M Thomas, W Evans. Kick off 4.05pm.
