More PCSOs set for valleys
BLAENAU Gwent council is set to abandon plans to introduce community safety wardens in favour of funding new police community support officers.
The authority is set to approve plans to put £55,000 a year into funding six new full-time equivalent PCSOs to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour across the borough.
A report to the council's executive committee, which is due to be discussed next Wednesday, says because of significant budget pressures, a community warden scheme first mooted last year is not a sustainable long-term option.
The report says the council needs to rethink its options to stregthen its commitment to its communities.
It says Gwent Police and Blaenau Gwent council are constantly being challenged on their response to issues such as youth nuisance, booze-fuelled anti-social behaviour, litter, parking, dog fouling and drugs.
Partnership and Communities Together meetings have highlighted the need for more visible policing to make residents feel safer in their neighbourhoods.
So £165,000 set aside to set up the community warden service will instead go towards funding six new full-time equivalent PCSOs to offer a more visible presence.
There are already 139 PCSOs across the Gwent Police force area, the majority of which are funded by the Home Office and Gwent Police.
But some of Gwent's PCSOs are co-funded by partners including Torfaen council, the Forestry Commission for Wales, Chepstow Town Council, and Newport Transport.
The report says PCSOs are an effective method of neighbourhood policing in Blaenau Gwent, whose highly visible patrols reassure the public, increase safety in public places and gather intelligence.

About time the valleys got recognised for needing more support, we do need more pcsos in blaenau gwent, lets see them walking the streets more,we see them regular in abertillery, cwmtillery and llanhilleth hopefully we will see more in swffryd and brynithel Then hopefully we will have a local policeman/woman back on the beat in swffryd.

Pcso's or plastic policemen as they are called are useless, They hold no powers. The Pcso's I see around ebbw vale always seem to be walking away from town or walking down back streets where there unlikely to see anything happening or be called into action. The money could be better spent on full time police officers (cough) maybe not. Just put the money in the bin.

People have pcso's are lucky,we have them in my area but we never see them,the only time we see the police is usally when they are cutting through to avoid malpas road,the motorway,yet we have our fare share of problems as well as everybody else.

"Plastic pigs" - I suggest you actually try to take the time to get educated.
1) PCSO's are paid
2) Special Police are often people who are using their time to get experience of policing before joining the full time police force.
3) Special Police are actually people who have better things to do than write derogatory comments about other people.
I am not affiliated in anway to the Police Force but the stupid comments above really rile me - CHRIS - NICE COMMENT!!!
