Dragons search for Teich-like talisman
|
| Gary Teichmann during his time with Newport |
NEWPORT Gwent Dragons are hoping to sign a New Zealander with real leadership qualities in the near future.
Head coach Paul Turner and chief executive Gethin Jenkins have just returned from a week-long visit to New Zealand and believe they have gone a long way towards achieving their goal.
Jenkins says the player they are after needs to be in the same mould as other southern hemisphere figures who have had a major influence in the UK - like Gary Teichmann with Newport, Tod Blackadder (Edinburgh), Xavier Rush (Cardiff Blues) and Jim Williams (Munster).
"We had the opportunity to sell what the Dragons are about and where we want to go in developing the team and the stadium," said Jenkins.
"We also got some feedback on various players and the opportunity for them to come and play in Wales.
"It was positive and worthwhile and we got some positive reaction on the right player we are trying to sign like a Teichmann, Rush, Blackadder or Jim Williams. It has to be the right player at the right time and it is also our statement to sign some leaders.
"We have had very positive talks and hopefully we can progress matters as soon as possible.
"The re-signing of coaches Leigh Jones and Dai Rees ties in with our plans to redevelop the ground. It's all coming on line for 2010 subject to planning permission. We remain positive."
Turner said: "I spoke to players out there at the back end of January/beginning of February and always felt it would be a better statement if we travelled there to see them.
"There are different agendas here, some are signed up with their countries, Super 14 or NPC and we've got to wade through that and see if they are available due to work permits and legal qualifications. We've got to go through the process.
"We have got to state our ambition, and the organisation has done that with the ground redevelopment. We have had to replace players we've lost and state our intent."
Jenkins says Bristol sharing Rodney Parade while their ground is being redeveloped remains a possibility.
"Talks are ongoing, there are lots of ifs and buts, they are redeveloping their ground and we are one of their possible options.
"We are building strong foundations and we are looking to take this region forward. Lots of things are happening and us going to New Zealand was part of it."
Dragons captain Colin Charvis is sure a major overseas signing or two will help the squad.
"There are not many people who get to 30 and are still playing great rugby but are not required by their national squads and are still available," he said.
"Matt Burke always did something special for us at Newcastle, but also off the field who can bring things to the club. It's getting the balance right with players who have a great work ethic. The odd one seeks a retirement fund but others want to work hard.
"You could look at any team in Europe and you can't have too many leaders, it's finding that balance.
"You could probably do with three or four in your squad, but it's finding them - and paying them! We could have won five or six more games this season with them."

DB, Why do you bother to make so many comments on a team you have no interest in. Just let it go.

Not sticking up for DB, but he does have a point. How many hollow promises has the chairman mad ethis year, just a few to mull over:-
1 1400 seater stand development
2 Big name signings if season tickets bought (no reason given for this failure)
3 Big name signings after the world cup
4 New 15000 seater stadium - application to be submitted before easter - application not submitted!
Big signings, unfortunately I will have to remain sceptical!

I didn't buy a season ticket but have been to almost every match where work committments allowed and to be honest half the time I would have been better off doing the decorating. The home match against Edingburgh was horrific. And what luckdai says is spot on.

Dosen't suggest you intend supporting the side any time soon, even if the Newport part of the name is removed. Give it a rest man.

What did expect the Dubai 7's?

Things seems to have come full circle with the seasrch for a new Teichmann. Sadly we are now back at the position Newport were in prior to the Tony Brown years and with a lot of the Newport support disaffected with 'Dragons' etc it's a weaker position really. The last few years have been a total balls up from start to finish. Just like the emperor's new clothes though, no-one at the WRU or the Dragons will admit it. For the sake of rugby it's time to stop trying to create some unwanted, unecessary identity when we know what works at Newport.

That's why we want to get together as a single entity and you and your dinasaurs (or ostriches) want to stand alone. The only thing that worked at Newport during the past 45 years was TB's chequebook. Look what happened when he went.

That seems to be a subject they are less qualified in. I agree it has to be a single entity to succeed, rather than the self-defeating 50/50 mess we now have. Bearing in mind where it is based and the fact that Newport are the only club involved, it has to be Newport stand alone. I expect when we develop Rodney Parade to pay for the new ground that is what will happen at last.
Big signings, unfortunately I will have to remain sceptical!
hazell stated quite clearly that we would get a big name signing if 4000 season tickets were sold. we didn't sell anything like that amount.
and the consultation on the new stadium has been going on for a few weeks now.

Gwentman, you say the only reason we succeeded under tony brown was because of his money. well isnt that exactly like the situation the blues and ospreys find themselves in. take away their backer and they would be in the same predicament.

Never mind, I'm sure the departure of Rhys Thomas, Michael Owen, Ceri Sweeney and Colin Charvis will be offset by the much heralded arrival of Ben Broster, Shaun Connor, Troy Flavell and Tom Willis.
