A NEWPORT-based gun store which is the UKs largest sporting gun retailer is in administration.

D. J. Litt Ltd employs 20 people at its store on the Masglas Retail Park, and sells rifles, shotguns, hunting and shooting accessories and clothing.

It is the UK's largest sporting gun retailer, with more than 2000 product lines and an annual turnover of £12 million.

It also has shooting grounds in Newport.

Richard Hawes and Robin Allen of Deloitte were appointed as Joint Administrators on Thursday.

The failure of the company is attributed to recent cash flow problems.

Richard Hawes, Joint Administrator, said: "We are assessing the company's position to secure a sale of the business and assets.

"We are seeking a buyer for the business as a going concern and interested parties should contact the Administrators without delay".

Bob, I do not normally respond to fatuous comments, but yours has made me see red.

I am not a hunter but people I know eat what they shoot. Litts also supply equipment for clay pigeon shooting - I have had a superb time whenever I have taken part in a clay shoot. Their shooting ground at Treetops is breath taking. You should try it.

When I took my son to the shop last year to buy an air rifle for target shooting - to allow him to learn skill & responsibility - the staff couldn't do enough for us. Warm, welcoming & honest.

I sincerely do hope Litts come through this for the staff's sake and for the gun community's sake.

If nothing else, they had a fab selection of wellies... I agree with you, Corpa, I do hope they come through this, there's plenty of stores in Newport that could shut their doors without being missed but this is our only country pursuits store.

I and most other sane people hope that it does not reopen. Misuse of airguns in Newport is rife it is time that the sale of all guns including airguns was banned. There is absolutly no reason why anyone should need to own a gun.

I am sorry that people are loosing their jobs but not at all sorry that it is clossing.

And is there a reason you need to use a computer? No?

Get off it then, we could do with out a lot of modern day luxuries but we're lucky enough to have a choice about what we want. If you don't want it fair enough but there's more than just you living in the vicinity of this struggling business Bob!

Bob to make global remarks that all airgun owners are irresponsible is unfair.

I for one am very sorry to see this Company go under, its been in business for years. The way I see it, its another local company lost, leaving 20 people out of work, who no doubt have families to support and bills to pay like the rest of us. This will clearly also have a knock on effect on their suppliers too, who could very well all suffer financially. As a keen sportsperson I will miss this store, now I will have to travel to England to get my sporting supplies at additional petrol costs and bridge tolls. I wish the owners and workers well for the future.

Bob, most "Sane people" in Newport are unaware that Litts actually exists. They started off on Malpas Road where they were very visible and moved to this much quieter more discreet location. You have to be seen by security cameras and be buzzed in. You can bet all the thugs that abuse air weapons did not buy them from Litts - have you ever looked at how easy it is to obtain a weapon on the internet? TOO EASY.

Has anyone noticed that a lot of air gun problems exist in Maesglas, only a stones throw from this store?

Clearly the locals are aware of where to source their guns and pellets! I believe that a young lad from Maesglas was also accidentally killed by an air gun? But of course, this shouldn't factor in whether an arms trader should be permitted!

More numpties in Newport are injured as a result of alcohol abuse that guns so why not close all the pubs??

Everyone complains about the nanny state, but go on about banning something they know nothing about and just base their decisions on perception.

I know a lot of people who use guns for sport. They don't harm anyone or anything, they are vetted by the police before they can have a licence and also needed to produce this licence at Litts, before they could buy anything.

You will always get an idiot element in society who abuse things, so why penalise everyone?

I have known the Directors and staff at D J Litt's for nearly 30 years. I have always found them to be entirely trustworthy, pleasant, knowledgable and very friendly.

It is a great shame that the company has gone into adminstration. I, like many others, will probably loose a very substantial sum of money which is, OF COURSE, regrettable. However, I find Bob's irrational, intolerant and incorrect comments offensive. The Government banned hand guns over 10 years ago, yet more people are killed and injured by handguns than any other type of gun. Banning guns does not stop crime. Indeed most of those murdered over recent months were killed by hand guns (already banned), knives (yet to be banned), kicked to death (IMPOSSIBLE TO BAN), even murderd by a broken piece of glass! Bob would no doubt demand that hand guns be rebanned, all knives be banned, along with pieces of broken glass! of course,it is tragic that so many people are being murdered needlessly. However, rather than blaming the weapons being used, we need to address the reasons why the people using them have become so violent. Then we need to have the courage to do something about it!

Bob you are more than likely a nice guy, but get a life you just dont understand. I used air fifles from a very young age and still shoot. The earlier you teach right from wrong the better. In any type of activity.
