A NEW retirement home is set to open in Gwent - for horses.

The Winnies, located in Cross Ash between Abergavenny and Monmouth, is opening its stable doors this month for retired gelded horses to enjoy their autumn years in peace.

Owner Juliet Brady was inspired after retiring her former show jumper horse Pils, named because he is a Holstein breed, five years ago and watching him benefit from the care and space he was given.

Mrs Brady, 39, said: "I can't wait, it's so exciting. To get the horses in the yard will be fantastic. To see them grazing on the land gives me such a feel-good factor."

Mrs Brady has been around horses since she was four, and the livery yard will take a maximum of eight horses to ensure they each have enough space.

The property covers 16 acres, and anyone who drops their horse off is free to visit, and those who live too far away can receive a monthly update along with photos Mrs Brady added: "These old horse need peace and quiet, I'm delighted to offer that to other horses seeing as how my horse benefited from it."
