A POLISH woman found dead in a Newport house in the early hours of yesterday had been stabbed.
Police launched a murder inquiry after the 27-year-old woman was found dead in a corner house on Dewstow Street, in the Corporation Road area of Newport.
The woman was said to have been celebrating her birthday on Monday night, just hours before her death.
But just before 3am yesterday, two ambulances arrived at the house on the corner of Dewstow Street and Caldicot Street, followed by a police car and riot van.
The woman was found dead inside the house. It is understood she had a single stab wound to the chest and bruising on her arms. A knife was found at the scene, but the exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed by police.
A 25-year-old Polish man was arrested and taken into police custody.
Neighbours also heard hysterical screaming and shouting outside the house, coming from the deceased woman's sister. Her distress was so severe, she was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital and sedated, but was released yesterday afternoon.
A police cordon remained in place outside the house yesterday and forensic teams attended the scene.
The woman's body was removed from the property at around 1pm.
Neighbours on the road told the Argus they were shocked by the events of the previous night.
Few knew the couple well, but described the dead woman as a blonde lady who was often seen walking her Rottweiler dog.
Tony Phillips, who lives nearby, said: "I believe it was her birthday on Monday, and I saw her partner bringing her a bunch of flowers in the afternoon.
"I just can't imagine what went wrong later."
Many other residents were left shocked by the previous night's events, and many were woken by the disturbance, reporting shouting, screaming and the flashing blue lights of police cars and ambulances.

Oh dear, this story is shocking and yet not suprising. Figures show that crimes such as this have drastically increased since the recent influx of Eastern immigrants. My sympathies go out to her friends and family she has left behind in Poland.

Hmmm thought you might call her prejudiced.... apologies for my next statement, but 'seren_night'..... your a little like Cilla Black.... "Surprise Surprise"...... I wish you would stop calling people prejudiced because they have an opinion... Mandy did pass on her condolences to the young Polish ladies family, so to me, personally, she is obviously not prejudiced..... However, this was a sad story on a young lady that had lost her life, irrelevent of her nationality, she was living locally... My condolences to her family and friends...
