A POLISH woman found dead in a Newport house in the early hours of yesterday had been stabbed.

Police launched a murder inquiry after the 27-year-old woman was found dead in a corner house on Dewstow Street, in the Corporation Road area of Newport.

The woman was said to have been celebrating her birthday on Monday night, just hours before her death.

But just before 3am yesterday, two ambulances arrived at the house on the corner of Dewstow Street and Caldicot Street, followed by a police car and riot van.

The woman was found dead inside the house. It is understood she had a single stab wound to the chest and bruising on her arms. A knife was found at the scene, but the exact cause of death has not yet been confirmed by police.

A 25-year-old Polish man was arrested and taken into police custody.

Neighbours also heard hysterical screaming and shouting outside the house, coming from the deceased woman's sister. Her distress was so severe, she was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital and sedated, but was released yesterday afternoon.

A police cordon remained in place outside the house yesterday and forensic teams attended the scene.

The woman's body was removed from the property at around 1pm.

Neighbours on the road told the Argus they were shocked by the events of the previous night.

Few knew the couple well, but described the dead woman as a blonde lady who was often seen walking her Rottweiler dog.

Tony Phillips, who lives nearby, said: "I believe it was her birthday on Monday, and I saw her partner bringing her a bunch of flowers in the afternoon.

"I just can't imagine what went wrong later."

Many other residents were left shocked by the previous night's events, and many were woken by the disturbance, reporting shouting, screaming and the flashing blue lights of police cars and ambulances.

Oh dear, this story is shocking and yet not suprising. Figures show that crimes such as this have drastically increased since the recent influx of Eastern immigrants. My sympathies go out to her friends and family she has left behind in Poland.

Are you seriuosly blaming an increase in violent crime on Esatern European migrants?
What are these figure you're referring to?
I can quote figure that show that ill informed women called "Mandy" are given to making broad, sweeping and woefully incorrect knee jerk statements about subjects that they know very little about!
Whilst the expression of your sympathy is well placed I feel your preceeding statement somewhat makes it a hollow gesture!

"Figures show that crimes such as this have drastically increased since the recent influx of Eastern immigrants." Where is your evidence Mrs racist? When making a huge sweeping statement like this without evidence of facts and figures YOU ARE JUST AS BAD OR WORSE FOR INCITING HATRED! Why do people 'like you' take the world at face value and are incredible stupid?

Hmmm thought you might call her prejudiced.... apologies for my next statement, but 'seren_night'..... your a little like Cilla Black.... "Surprise Surprise"......

I wish you would stop calling people prejudiced because they have an opinion...

Mandy did pass on her condolences to the young Polish ladies family, so to me, personally, she is obviously not prejudiced.....

However, this was a sad story on a young lady that had lost her life, irrelevent of her nationality, she was living locally...

My condolences to her family and friends...

I forgot to say, Mandy, I would imagine that there are far more Brits that kill Brits in this country... so before Seren you jump on the bandwagon.. I agree with your comment that a Brit may have been involved... it's very sad nonetheless....

I didn't know her well, but she seemed a lovely girl. A bright light has been snuffed out. My deepest sympathy goes out to her family and friends.

Women! why is it Ceri, that when a person's nose has been put out joint(in this case you are coming across as a nit-picker and not a contributor) the weakest person always has a go at the easy target(seren)I Commented on this too, but you choose have a go at just one person. bit desperate really isn't it love?

I'm very sorry that you think I am a "nit-picker".... However, sometimes I have to humour myself in order to stop getting angry...Hmmm Seren an easy target I think not... I think you may want to refer to many of Seren's earlier "digs" at myself and others about "being prejudiced".... it seems nobody can say one bad word about anybody from a different country or who has a different religion/culture... and when "Seren" is bad mouthing everybody who has their own opinion on stories and issues, for once I hit back (i'm not normally so sarcastic mind you, just wound up).. and now I'm called called a "nit-picker" (you may be right though on this ocassion).. I was annoyed yet again about somebody being called "prejudiced", when they are clearly not...You obviously know each other, and it's nice that you stick up for each other.....

Well here's the thing "Seren_Night" & "Man about Town"... I am polite enough to apologise if I have caused offence... Sorry.

And for the record Seren, I actually agreed with one of your comments about not knowing whether a Brit was involved or not!

I am certainly not a small minded person, and my friends certainly aren't... perhaps one day you may find out out how I support people from different countries, as well as our own country... maybe you won't.... My issue with which we will agree to disagree, is the UK already being overcrowded, and the Government letting more immigrants in... it's nothing to do with race or colour...
