EERIE lights photographed above Newport led one resident to think the city might need its own X-file.

Mark Holmes, 48, of Stanford Road, was walking his girlfriend home on Saturday night when they suddenly saw a series of glowing orange orbs fill the sky.

Mr Holmes said: "It was about midnight and we were cutting across a field to get to my girlfriend's house on Dowland Close.

"The sky was quite clear and suddenly these large orange lights appeared.

"There were about eight of them just floatng across the sky.

"They were huge and moving around and they looked like they were on fire."

And although the quick-thinking Mr Holmes managed to record some footage of the bizarre objects, he said after about a minute, they just disappeared.

"It was really weird," he said.

"We just couldn't believe it."

He said the lights seemed quite far away and estimated the orbs were about a metre wide.

He is convinced the lights were not fireworks or streetlamps.

But he said: "I still have no idea what they could have been. It was really spooky."

Did you see these lights? Let us know via the link below.

Having watched the video, it looks like the sort of clip that you take when you're walking home late at night from your local public house and then suddenly, you hit the ground like a dropped bag of chips. When you come round, you look up and see orange glowing lights - possibly the same sort of light given off by a sodium street light ??!! Things do seem different when you're lying backwards through a hedge!!

I know it wasn't a plane or streetlights but no-1 else believes me! I saw them on 3 seperate occasions over newport about 2 years ago

They "Aliens" probably wanted to study one of the more primative societies on earth, hence their nocturnal visit to Ringland.

I totally agree, of course there are other life forms out there, it would be a bit arrogant to assume we would be the only planet in the Universe getting dumped on by politians... and grossly unfair ;-)

Anyway, I live in hope that Buzz Lightyear will come back soon and whisk me away to his planet for a candlit dinner and a nice glass of chianti... he can take me to infinity any day :-))

I can confirm i saw these orange lights and have a few pictures of them and other strange things / figures that appeared on my camera that night. Except, it was Tuesday night and i was at a BBQ in Cardiff, the nearest side to Newport. I personally don't believe in other life such as aliens or UFO's but after picking these up on my camera I have some slight belief there could be something. I didn't think that the picture would come out of what i actually saw, like people seeing a ghost and taking a picture, it disappears. I didn't believe my eyes until i heard that some other people had seen these strange lights / figures in the sky.

I rushed inside to get the video camera, and filmed it. I have sent this into the editor, so hopefully they will publish for you all to view. We dont believe in UFO's etc, but this wasnt natural, or something any of the 8 of us have seen before....... 1. It WAS last Saturday night.
2. In my opinion they were hot air balloons.
3. They travelled west pretty quick after the burners went out, so there was a strong breeze up there.
4. Who flies balloons at night?
5. Ringland is OK, please don't knock it!

I saw lots of stars hovering around my head yesterday, there is no truth in the rumour the 10 lagers and my falling down the stairs had any bearing on this... I saw pink elephants too.

I was with a friend when I also saw these orange lights over the fields between Caerleon and St Julians on Saturday 10 May 08 at around midnight.
We had not been drinking alcohol and hadnt taken drugs!
There were approx 20 -30 of these 'orange balls of fire' which seemed to be floating in a southerly direction.
At the time I was seeing them I was also trying to work out what they could be - reflections from street lights, fireworks, large glowing insects (?!) etc but there was no explanation. Like some other people on here I dont believe
in aliens so I researched them on the net.
There have been many sightings all over the UK, America and in Australia.
I read many articles about what they could be and from that, I think they may have been weather balloons. These are released around midnight and generally on clear, nights. They have small lights attached to them and disintergrate after approx 15 minutes.
I'm not a scientist but I think this might be a good explanation of what we DID see!!!

There seems to be many people that saw these UFO's. And, as for you xclairex i would like to tell you that i bought my camera less than 2 weeks ago and how come many other pictures have been taken of the same thing. Faulty camera? no, it's perfectly fine thank-you. Also I'd just like to say that a UFO doesn't mean alien like you read in small children's books, it is actually an abbreviated word for UNIDENTIFIED FLYING OBJECT. So, in future before being sinical, check your facts.

Well as a guest of the above mentioned 40th party, I can quite honestly say that the Chinese lanterns were a fabulous thing to do and wishes included a cure for MS, world peace, new cars and lottery wins - I am delighted to see that others in South Wales were able to enjoy them too. I would, however, like to apologise to Mr Holmes of Newport for any concern he may have had for his safety.

georgethebear, newport says...
1:50pm Fri 16 May 08

I have seen the video and i can tell you that they are, what we call UFO balloons. I have let a few of these go myself and the orange glow is the firelighter which hangs on thin copper wires attached to a thin membrane which inflates just like a hot air balloon, but there must be hardly any wind for them to work properly. They can be seen for many miles and they will stay under the cloud cover, and will last for about 15 minutes. Don`t let this put you off the subject of ETs and UFOs.They do exist. They have been on this planet longer than we have. It`s them who put us here.
