THE omission of Colin Charvis from Wales' touring party for South Africa has made it even more likely that the Newport Gwent Dragons captain will announce his rugby playing retirement within days.

It is believed that Charvis, who has enjoyed two great seasons with the Dragons, was holding on to see whether he would make the Wales tour, especially with Martyn Williams, Robin Sowden-Taylor and Ben Lewis all injured.

But those hopes were dashed, Wales coach Warren Gatland stressing yesterday that Charvis not being involved in either the Six Nations or the Wales training camp in Ireland last week probably counted against his inclusion.

Gatland pointed out that Charvis is no longer a specialist seven, though he then went on to say that the position in the lair of the world champions would probably be filled by Jonathan Thomas, essentially a six or eight, with Dafydd Jones, also mainly a six, in reserve after the Llanelli Scarlets player was also called in from the international wilderness.

So the writing is on the wall for Charvis who has shown no inclination at 35 to carry on with the Dragons for another season, though there has been a clamour for him to do so from the fans, especially after last Friday's performance against Magners League champions Leinster.

Gatland admitted he watched that game, even though still in the Irish training camp. "We did watch the game and Colin played very well," he said.

"But he hasn't been playing a lot at seven either, though he's hugely experienced. There has beenspeculation about him returning, started by myself and we tried to get him involved in Ireland.

"But we spoke about perhaps denying a younger player the chance to be involved. We are looking at developing players, we are looking to the future as much as anything."

Dragons coach Paul Turner can see both sides of the coin. "Colin has been great for us and has shown real leadership qualities when we needed them at the end of the season, but I also see where Wales are coming from," he said.

Turner is delighted two Dragons players are making the trip to South Africa - tight head prop Rhys Thomas and scrum half Andy Williams.

Thomas was a member of the Six Nations squad, playing against Italy and Williams gets an unexpected opportunity after the withdrawal through injury of Mike Phillips and Dwayne Peel.

Promising Cardiff Blues backs Jamie Roberts and Tom James get the call while there is also a place for young Blues lock Bradley Davies, though he hardly played this season because of injury.

"He has potential, though I haven't seen much of him,"admitted Gatland. "But I've heard a lot about him and we can also have a look at Alun Wyn Jones at six if there are any injuries, so we are taking another second row."

Players also going who were not involved in the Six Nations are full back Morgan Stoddart, centre Andrew Bishop and London Irish scrum half Warren Fury, along with from Andy Williams and Dafydd Jones.

Big mistake leaving Charvis out, Burger will make mincemeat out of an out-of-position JT (pun intended).

Could anyone please explain to me what on earth Jamie Roberts has done to deserve all this hype?! He may be a big guy but he's too slow, I have no idea what he has done to deserve all the praise that is being heaped on him...rob howleys influence I presume...

To be fair what he lacks in speed he makes up for in strength in the tackle, he takes about 4 blokes to stop him!

Phil i can tell you, Jamie Roberts plays for the WRU Cardiff Blues thats why, Charvis' exclusion is a big mistake by Gatland because if we are being honest who has peformed better this season Charvis or Thomas ? The reason there is hype at Charvis being exclude is because he plays for the Dragons, if he played for Ospreys, Scarlets or the WRU Cardiff Blues he'd be in the squad, thats why players dont like coming to Newport

im so glad its not just me then. being big counts for nothing if you cant shift it, compare jamie roberts to matt banahan, who is only playing for the saxons, banahan wins every time. given the recent signings im really looking forward to next season. a decent 10 will get the backs going and i'll tip fussell, wyatt or morgan to easily cruise over 10 tries next season. hopefully webb will be as good a ball carrier as the other kiwis in wales and give big joe a helping hand in crossing the gain line...HOWEVER, there still wont be more than 2 dragons picked for the welsh squad next year.

who cares about Wales in all honesty. My first concern is what happens with the dragons. of course charvis should go to south africa, as you should be picking the best team. what justification has gatland got in picking Jones, when he hasnt played as much as Charvis then contradict himself and say he wont pick charvis because he doesnt want to "deny a younger player the chance to be involved. We are looking at developing players, we are looking to the future as much as anything."

seems a shame really that he isnt going but in al honesty if he stays with the draogons then that would be the best thing. as for picking alot of the cardiff youngsters, it has always happened in the past and will always happen when someone has got some influence from one of the regions.

I support, Newport, Dragons, Gwent whoever or what ever they will be called but it proves that players are reluctantly chosen because they play at the Parade, Charvis is clearly the form forward apart from Ryan Jones, but c'mon Mr Gatland how many of the "Young Guns" will actually play in any of the games, im all for Youth coming through but you need a player of Charvis calibre there, JT will get mashed by the Boks, LET THE WELSH TEAM BE PICKED ON FORM not NAME

He can shift it, look at the tries he's scored this season for Cardiff. I totally think Gatland has made a boob leaving Charvis out and he deserves a better end to his career, but Jamie Roberts has looked the business when I've seen him play, and don't forget he's more a full back than an out and out winger.

The Dragons player I'll be looking to make a big impact on the wing this season is Jimmy Norris, he's a class above Fussell imo.

I agree with Gatland omitting Charvis to be honest, what is the point in playing him for two tests that are really designed to give young blood a bit of a run only to omit him again for the autumn internationals, he's had his day i'm afraid, Wales need to bring fresh players in not keep playing 35 year olds

jimmy norris cant even get a game for newport and i highly doubt he'll feature for the dragons at all this coming season. if our 10 can actually run the game i think we'll see the best of all our backs (provided that gomer learns to pass). as for the article related topic of the charvis selection he is the only player to replace m.williams if you cast your minds back a few years (to 2005 6N i believe) who was the person keeping williams out, and its not as if he's been short of form since then. at least gatland wont have an excuse when burger teaches JT a lesson on how to play 7.

I very much like Colin as a player but being left behind is as a result of not going to ireland as soon as the dragons HC place was safe. He has this problem of going hot and cold and Gats is right not to pick him for the tour if he was not committed enuff to go to the tough training. Perhaps this says more about the dragons level of training and general fitness this season!
well done Colin for a great season with the dragons I am sure you have sold more tickets than any other player. Sorry you prob won't now join the 100 club but that is in part due to your hot and cold attitude.

I think he may have made a bit of an error in leaving Charvis behind. He may not have started at 7 in many of our games but he certainly plays like one in general open play. I'm also disapointed Bradley Davies got the nod over Charteris. When Luke has been fit this year he has shown some real signs of form while Davies is merely picked on potential.

I agree Charteris has put in some really good performances this season. his tackle count in recent games has been phenominal, esp against the O's @ RP

I can see both sides of the Charvis situation, its a shame time has caught up with colin he is playing just as well as ever at the moment i hope his enjoyment of the game is enough to play another season i agree also agree Charteris has performed well this season to take Davies is a surprise. Having seen Fury play a little for Irish this season he looks quite good but i thought Richie Rees who has been very good for the Blues was a more obvious choice

To those questioning Charvis's omission on grounds of fitness and 'giving youth a chance' what an absolute nonsense - he put in two man of the match performances in the space of FOUR DAYS and the player chosen in his stead is a crocked 28 year old with numerous caps. The only 'youth' at 7 is injured.

7:33pm Thu 15 May 08

Heart says charvis should go but it's all about the big picture. We have to look beyond the next 2 games to the future and build - yes colin is the form guy but he won't be around for the next six nations or world cup. Gatland has proved he is a good coach and I trust his decision.

what a crock of **** to people who say charvis has been ommitted because youth has to be develloped when no one of any youth that wil be developed is being taken. why do we keep using jonathan thomas as the example of youth when he has been around for a few years now and he hasnt really done anything of note apart from that one run in 2003 wc. you develop the youth through regional games and squad training not by throwing them straight in at a high level. wake up people
