Cwmbran man camps out to aid Poppy Appeal

HANDY FOR THE SHOPPING: Andrew Cobley, who camped at Tesco Extra at Spytty, Newport, collects a donation for the Poppy appeal from Richard and Key Hyde
IT WASN’T exactly the frontline, but a fundraiser braved the rattle of shopping trolleys for more than 48 hours as he camped out in a Newport supermarket to raise money for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.
Andy Cobley, 49, from Cwmbran, pitched his tent in the foyer of the Spytty Tesco Extra at 2.30pm on Friday and didn’t leave his post until the store closed on Sunday.
Mr Cobley, who works at the family resource centre in Cwmbran, managed to raise £370.56 for the Poppy Appeal which helps former service personnel.
Mr Cobley, explained: “My partner, Anne-Marie Payne, is a standard bearer for the Newport branch of the Royal British Legion so it is very important to her and she’s my partner, where she goes I follow.
“Obviously the store is 24 hours so the first night I didn’t get any sleep at all but when it closed on the Saturday night I managed to get two or three hours.
“When I got back I couldn’t decide what I needed more, a bath or a sleep,” he joked.
