RELATIVES and friends gathered together to celebrate Doris Pobjoy’s 100th birthday at the weekend.

Ms Pobjoy, known as Poppy, is a resident at Llanyravon Court Nursing Home, where staff held a birthday celebration for her.

She was born Doris May Warman on October 20, 1912 in Newport. Her father worked in a shipping office and her mum was a cook.

She had six brothers who worked in the army, the RAF and on the railway. She lived in North Street, Newport, until she got married to Robert Melville Pobjoy.

They had a daughter Pauline, who lives in Upper Cwmbran and son David, who lives in Lincoln. In 1938 the family moved to London and returned to Newport in 1948.

Ms Pobjoy worked in Dock Street Post Office where she became a Sub Postmistress.

She became Chairwoman of Cancer Research Committee and helped raise considerable funds, she also enjoyed playing bowls and became Treasurer of Newport Bowls Club. Ms Pobjoy was a keen gardener and loved travelling, and has been to France, Italy, Switzerland, Norway and America.

She has also enjoyed cruising. Ms Pobjoy has two grandchildren, Paul and Michelle and three great grand-children, Natalie, Andrew and Danielle.
