A GRIEVING mother want to learn the truth about her son's sudden death after a murder inquiry was closed by police.

Jeremy Vaughan, 42, who was blind and homeless, lived in Newport all his life, but he was led to a house in Cwmbran where he later died.

Mr Vaughan's body was found at a house on Maendy Way, Pontnewydd, on September 28.

Police initially arrested a 39-year-old man on suspicion of murder, but he was released without charge and a post-mortem examination of Mr Vaughan's body proved inconclusive.

Police are now treating the death as unexplained, pending additional post mortem test results.

Marion Shaw, who lives on Hendre Farm Drive in Ringland, said her son never stayed in one place for very long.

"He was my little man, he loved going to church," said Mrs Shaw. "But when he was older he went out and got in with the wrong crowd, they took advantage of him."

Mr Vaughan was banned by a court from swearing at anyone in Wales and had numerous convictions for assaulting police officers, affray, being drunk and disorderly and theft.

He lived in various properties in Pill, Somerton and Ringland, but had a drink problem and sometimes sold his furniture and moved on, said Mrs Shaw.

"He did have a vile tongue," she said. "The welfare said he would be better off in the gutter."

Mr Vaughan sometimes put on a fluorescent jacket and directed traffic in Newport city centre, referring to himself as PC Jez.

"He was a character, nobody could hold him, he was a free spirit and loved to roam," said Mrs Shaw.

"I don't think I'll ever put Jeremy to rest because the person will always be out there."

The family are appealing for anyone who may have seen Jeremy on a bus to Cwmbran, around the time of September 28, or may have seen or heard anything on Maendy Way that day, to come forward.

Police enquiries are still ongoing.
