CWMCARN High School, whose building was closed in October after an inspection found asbestos at the site, has recorded the best results for 11 to 14- year-olds in Caerphilly county this year, new figures reveal.

The local authority has released figures showing standards of pupil attainment in key stages one, two and three- which cover the ages of five to 14, before they start their GCSEs.

Cwmcarn High came out top in all three of the core subjects, maths, English and science, with Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni in Fleur de Lys and Blackwood Comprehensive also achieving good percentages.

The figures have strengthened the resolve of teachers to keep Cwmcarn school together, despite the fact they are now travelling to Blaenau Gwent every day.

Pupils are being bussed to a temporary site in Ebbw Vale for the rest of the academic year as the discovery of asbestos is investigated at the school. Caerphilly council officials have been unable to give assurances about Cwmcarn’s longterm future as the severity of the asbestos problem is being assessed.

The expected level of achievement by pupils after key stage three is at least level five in an eightlevel scale, with 90 per cent of Cwmcarn students achieving this for English and science in 2012 and 86 per cent in maths.

Cwmcarn scored the highest on each core subject out of 14 secondary schools in the borough.

Deputy headmaster Huw Wring said having to travel 11 miles up the road has strengthened the resolve of teachers and pupils.
