Victims of press intrusion are calling for an independent regulator, backed up by law and financial penalties, while newspaper editors fear that statutory regulation will limit press freedom.

Quite predictively, it turns out that the prime minister doesn't want to implement any of Leveson's proposals at all(!) This is a government that knows it's in a weak position - well out of its depth. With all those skeletons that it has in the cupboard he fears the consequences of getting on the wrong side of the papers. Imho, this only goes to show how much disproportionate power the press has over government in this country. The press go on about their role in being 'the voice of the people', but instead it is their voice, spin on events and the vested interests of their media baron paymasters that we hear. For any one section of society to wield such influence over the supposed elected representatives of the people is profoundly anti-democratic.
