NEWPORT’s Big Sing event raised £1,600 for charity More than 300 people packed out Newport Cathedral to take part in the event, and the Rotary Club of Newport, who organised it, handed over the cheques on Tuesday.
The concert raised money for the Children’s Hospital Wales in Cardiff and Newport Cathedral’s Emergency Fund, who received £800 each.
The concert saw performers from across the city perform a series of popular tunes.
Favourites belted out by the Dorothy Adams Singers and the choir of St Julian’s Primary School included Jerusalem, Love Divine and Guide Me O Thou Great Redeemer.
The choirs were accompanied by Jeremy Blasby, the cathedral assistant organist, and members of the Caerleon Comprehensive School Brass Quintet, with the Bishop of Monmouth, the Rt Revd Dominic Walker, and the mayor of Newport, Cllr John Guy, among the guests. A presentation was made at St Julian’s Primary School nativity musical on Tuesday to LATCH by Year 3 pupil Luke Ash, who spent several months being treated at the children’s hospital last year.
