SIX-WEEK OLD Ella Falconer from Brynmawr, was among more than 1,000 spectators who gathered in Abergavenny to see the start of the annual Monmouthshire Hunt today.

Around 50 riders and hounds gathered in Cross Street outside the Angel Hotel for the Boxing Day hunt, organised by the Abergavenny Hunt Committee, and a traditional event since the 1700s.

Ella’s mum, Hannah Falconer said she comes to see the horses with her Dad Keith Bradley and family every year.

One of the youngest riders was Evie Williams, four, who was riding her pony Annie. Mum Hazel Williams, of Llanvihangel Crucorney said it was the first time Evie had taken part in the event.

She said: "Evie has recently got Annie and wanted to come and ride at what is a lovely traditional event."

The Kennedy family from Blaenavon and Garndiffaith were among those to show their support by clapping as the riders and hounds set off towards the Bus Station.

Claire Kennedy said: "This is the first time the whole family has come together. It is exciting, especially for my nieces as we are an animal-loving family."

Rider and joint master, Liz Egerton, who has been attending the event since she was three said: "There is always tremendous support for the hunt which has taken place here for over 50 years and is an important part of rural life."

She added: "It gets people out on Boxing Day and is a great tradition."
