DOG owners whose animals bite a burglar could face prosecution under a proposed new law backed by a Gwent AM.

That’s according to the Kennel Club, which says it is seriously concerned about the Welsh Government’s Control of Dogs (Wales) Bill.

The law has been backed by John Griffiths, Newport East AM and Welsh Government environment minister.

Kennel Club communications director Caroline Kisko said: “Whilst we welcome the intention of the Welsh Government to improve legislation surrounding dangerous and out of control dogs, we are seriously concerned about some of the negative implications for perfectly responsible dog owners within the suggested Control of Dogs (Wales) Bill.” The bill is under consultation.

The reason why people have dogs in their homes apart from the obvious, is to help protect the home. If some one breaks into your property, surely you have the right to defend it to a certain extent ! If my dog bit a burglar I would fight tooth and nail (no pun intended) to defend her from any backlash. Seriously do these AMs have any grip on reality ? This isn't 1942 when we can leave our doors unlocked etc !! Get a proper job Mr. Griffiths if you're going to miss use the one you have !

thats the stupidest thind i ever heard of. if a burgler came in the house my dog would imediatley go nuts because his place is being invaded and his first thought would be to protect me and my family. i understand the bill if the dog just bit someone for no reason whatsoever in the middle of the street, but when his space and home and family is being threatened he's gonna want to protect it and us. this goes to prove that the government are thick as bricks and obviously do not own a pet. idiots. go and concentrate on something more important.

Once again a meddling WAG has stuck his over paid nose into dog ownership. What happens to not just home owners dogs but what about Companieswho have guard dogs? These dogs are there for a purpose to guard the property,is that not what our pet dog is doing for us.
So I say to him look at running Wales for all of us and stop trying to further your career with I'll thought ideas.

this is complete **** they are called GUARD DOGS FOR A REASON, if someone breaks in to a property then who cares if they get bitten or injured, its their own dam fault for doing it in the 1st place, this is just as bad as the 80+ year old woman that pushed a burglar down the stairs and got arrested for GBH/ABH (this was about 3 years ago).

how about if a you are running away from the police and they use their dogs and the dog bites you?? can you get the officer done for the dog biting you?? most likely not because its the dogs duty, same as its our dogs duty to defend it home.

wonder if this AM has a dog,. if so i would sure like to see someone burgle their home and let the dog bite the burglar, see if they think it should still be ok.

bunch of **** **** the lot of them

I understand the Welsh Assembly Government applied to change their name to the 'Welsh Government', but were refused. Why then are they insisting on using this spurious title? They changed to WAG from the National Assembly of Wales because (I like to believe) so many of us were calling them the 'Nat. ****. of Wales' when we wrote to them!

Well I must say I have never heard such utter tripe!! Our 2 dogs were rescued from death row from the RSPCA and have given us nothing but joy, If someone entered our property with the intent of steeling our hard earned goods they would both happliy bite their butts off with good reason and I love them for that, if these low lifes make the choice to commit crime why on earth should our protectors be punished !!! DISGRACEFUL!!!
