MORE than £238,000 has been raised so far from the 2012 Gwent Poppy Appeal.

The total currently stands at £238,473.98 with more still coming in to try and reach the appeal’s target of £300,000.

The money will be donated to the Armed Forces, their families and veterans.

Gwent poppy appeal coordinator, Mike Jones said he was “very pleased” with the figure.

He said: “This year’s Poppy Appeal finishes on September 30, so I am very pleased with the figure so far especially as we still have another nine months to go.”

The 2012 appeal was launched at Newport’s Transporter Bridge in October last year with a memorial and balloon launch.

Poppy Appeal organisers, veterans, friends and family attended the ceremony along with Newport mayor Cllr John Guy.
