THE funeral of the former president of the Gwent branch of the National Association of Retired Police Officers will take place on Monday January 21.

Royce Gardener, MBE, died on December 29 aged 88 at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport following a stroke 11 days earlier.

During his 30 years of service in the police force he was Princess Margaret's bodyguard and was on duty in the temporary mortuary during the Aberfan disaster.

He was stationed in numerous valleys areas before being promoted to a detective constable at Blackwood.

He received an MBE in 2004 for services to Gwent Police.

He was also Chairman of the Gwent Police Pensioners Association for 30 years, Chairman of the Caerleon Pensioners for 23 years, Vice Chairman of the Newport Senior Citizens Forum and Vice Chairman of the Newport Breathe Easy group.

The funeral service will take place at St. Cadoc's Church at 11am followed by interment at Caerleon Cemetery. Family flowers only, donations to be made to St. David's Foundation Hospice Care.
