A BALLET inspired by the music of Cerys Matthews has been shortlisted for an award for best dance production of 2012.
The ballet 'Tir', named after and inspired by Cerys Matthews' 2009 album of traditional Welsh songs, is one of two Ballet Cymru productions shortlisted for a Theatre Critics of Wales award, along with their version of 'The Tempest'.
Speaking to the Argus before the ballet was performed, Cerys Matthews said: "It is a very maverick left-field thing to do. Usually with traditional songs there's a traditional dance, but this is something truly original and you don't get that very often nowadays.
"I respect the maverick."
John Griffiths, AM for Newport East, said: "Having seen a number of Ballet Cymru performances I wholeheartedly support their nominations.
"They have brought quality ballet and dance to the Riverfront in Newport and across the country and beyond. This is testament to their hard work and excellence."
Cerys Matthews tweeted to say Ballet Cymru "deserve to win every dance prize in my opinion."
The Theatre Critics of Wales award winners will be announced at a ceremony at Sherman Cymru in Cardiff on January 26.
