A MAN from Spain has won a ‘date’ with Enzo Calzaghe after placing the highest bid on the online auction in aid of charity.

Ross Maco, 30, saw the auction that was being run by the owner of Ty Coffee in Oakdale, Blackwood, Alex Jones, via Twitter on the last day, and didn’t hesitate in placing a bid.

Mr Maco said: “I have been to see Enzo and Joe on numerous occasions, In 2008 I travelled to Las Vegas to watch Joe take on his biggest challenge, Bernard Hopkins at the Thomas and Mack centre.

“Enzo is one of my heroes and I respect him as a trainer.

He had a little gym but produced three world champions.”

Mr Maco, who is originally from Barry, but now lives in Seville, will be making a special trip back to the UK for the date, after placing the winning bid of £150.

He said: “The money is nothing, as it is a once-in-alifetime opportunity, while raising money for charity.

“I’m going to question him on everything. I’m just really excited and I have so much to ask.”

Mr Maco will be taking his fiancee, Mia Williams, on the evening next month to meet Mr Calzaghe at The Celtic Manor Resort in the Rafters Restaurant.

Mr Calzaghe, 63, promises the winner a great laugh and good food on the night.

Ms Jones came up with the win a date concept to raise money for the charity Mencap UK.

Ty Coffee, situated on Oakdale Square, will also hold a book signing with Mr Calzaghe on January 26, between midday and 2pm.
