Newport's university closed tomorrow

DUE to the expected severe weather conditions and the Met Office’s Red Alert, the University is expected to be closed on Friday 18th January and all teaching cancelled.

Another day off for the public sector I hope their pay is being docked the private sector aka wealth creators of the country will be working. At least they will have time to reflect on their long holidays and large pensions!

They will have to take the day off as leave if its the same as the council...

Please could you validate you comment about public sector pay, conditions and pensions?

I think the University has common sense. Ranger 12 when travelling to work tommorow on dangerous roads with the possibilty of hours stuck in traffic please post your comment again. Im only worried about those parents who are forced to take a unpaid day of work if schools are closed. I bet most of the negative comments are from scrounging benefit claimants who never pay tax. Universitys are funded from tution fees and grants from research. Hope those who are working tommorow have a safe journey to work.

Just found out they have closed most of the high schools in Newport tomorrow, I know Bassaleg and Duffryn are closed.

Excuse me, but some public sector workers HAVE to work what ever the weather, our Firefighters, police officers, paramedics, nurses etc. Don't tar us all with the same brush, some of us struggle in to work to keep you PRIVATE sector workers safe.

I am a public servant and work in a Jobcentre. I have to go into work whether it's an inch of snow or 6 foot. Not all public servants use the excuse of a flake of snow to have a day off.

I work for the NHS and as I work within 2 miles I will be expected to walk in to walk. We are entitled to take 1 snow day in a rolling 12 months but few take it and opt to take annual leave or try and work from home or an alternative location or if possible take work home (if office based obviously). I have worked for the NHS 15 years and have never had time off for bad weather. I live within 2 miles so I am expected to walk in if it is safe to do so. So get your facts straight please. The university and schools will have similar policies. I'd cost the taxpayer a fortune if it had to pay for all the unpaid work I do.

The headline also says 'expected to close' that doesn't mean it is closed tomorrow. If it doesn't snow then it will be open as usual.

The "university" (soon to be no more - just turned into two campuses of the university of glamorgan) is closed today because it's to DANGEROUS for staff and students to attend. The support staff have to take annual leave yet the academics and "management" just have the day off with no penalties !!!! Really fair - not !!!!!!

.....no mention that many courses only have 3 days of actual face to face lectures....and students can study at home......and many academics staff regularly work from home on non teaching days....
