DESPITE the travel chaos, there was plenty of fun to be had across Gwent.

More sleet and snow is forecast across Gwent through the weekend and into Monday.
While not as heavy as today's, sleet and snow can be expected with temperatures peaking at around 0C.


As a result the Met Office have issued a warning for ice for tomorrow morning.

DISRUPTION was caused across Blaenau Gwent with many snowed in but others still braving the elements to carry out their duties.

NEWPORT'S British and Irish Cup match away at Connacht tomorrow afternoon has been postponed because the Black and Ambers were unable to travel due to the adverse weather.

Assistant Chief Constable of Gwent Police Simon Prince paid tribute to his officers  saying:

"Today's conditions have been very challenging for Gwent Police but I'm very proud of the dedication that officers and staff have shown in getting into work and getting on with their duties of helping to keep Gwent safe.

Chief Inspector Rod Grindlay of Gwent Police added:

"Since the snow began to fall in the early hours of this morning we have dealt with over 50 calls in relation to road traffic incidents all of which were connected to the weather. These include several Road Traffic collisions due to the treacherous driving conditions which have led to roads being closed temporarily."

DISRUPTION could run into next week with more snow forecast.
Monmouthshire council says with more snow forecast for Monday it is expecting to run services at a level "at least as high" as today.
A spokesman said they hope to have more of its schools open that day.

Council team shows true grit to keep Monmouthshire roads clear

WHILE most people in Monmouthshire were fast asleep the council's gritting team at its three depots were working through the night to clear the roads.

In Abergavenny, customers queued outside Mountain Warehouse on the High Street to snap up hats, gloves and snow boots. Store supervisor William Jones, was forced to put up a sign to say the store had sold out of sledges.


He said: "It's been unbelievable. We had customers queuing outside this morning, whilst many shops didn't open. The sledges were the first to go. We've sold 25 but people were still asking for them so I had to put a sign in the window to say we've sold out."

“Whilst it’s good to see the children enjoying themselves in the snow, the disruption is another blow that business can do without.

“In a tough month that’s already seen notable retail casualties, the high street is made to suffer further. Shoppers stay at home, workers must take a day off to look after children and all manner of services are disrupted.

“The key concern, of course, is safety and I’m glad to say that I’ve witnessed much patience and common sense today.”

WESTERN Power Distribution said that 350 customers in Gwent are currently without power because of snow related problems.
Areas most affected are Usk and Pontymister.
Karen Welch of Western Power Distribution  said: "Most problems have been caused by trees laden with snow which have fallen over and broke some of our lines.
"We have made extra provision and are working as quickly as we can to deal with the problems.
"We have doubled the number of people working on standby and our offices are well-manned."

Aneurin Bevan Health Board is urging people to avoid calling main hospital switchboards unless call are urgent. Due to transport difficulties outpatient clinics are badly affected but where appointments are cancelled patients will be re-booked as early as possible.

The majority of GP surgeries are open as noraml but home visiting may be difficult.

A&E units are coping but must prioritise the most urgent cases and the public are asked to be patient.

GRITTING lorries in Monmouthshire started at 1am this morning according to a spokesman for Monmouthshire council.
However, with fewer cars on the road than normal, the snow has not been compacting down on the grit and gritting hasn't worked as well as the authority hoped.

Arriva trains experiencing difficulties.

It said: "“Currently we are experiencing delays on multiple locations on the Arriva Trains Wales as a result of the heavy snowfall.

“Whilst we are closely monitoring the weather situation which may result in short notice delays and cancellations, we are working very hard to run services as close to our normal timetable as possible.
