A LUCKY Newport resident received a £25 voucher and two were given a doggie goodie bag after council officers spotted them cleaning up after their dogs.

Dog wardens and community safety wardens are issuing fixed penalty notices to anyone caught leaving their dog’s mess in public places.

But they have also been collecting names and addresses of owners who have been spotted doing the right thing.

Following a draw one resident received a £25 voucher from Pets At Home and a doggie goodie bag, while two runners-up received goodie bags.

Sixteen fixed penalty notices were issued between April 1 and the end of December last year.

One person has since been prosecuted for non-payments and was fined £200 with costs of £77.50.

Newport councillor Gail Giles, cabinet member for licensing and statutory functions, said: “We want to send out a clear message that we will not tolerate irresponsible dog owners who allow animals to blight our streets.

“The campaign is also about raising awareness and trying to make people realise that clearing up after their dogs helps to make public areas both more pleasant and healthier.”

She's a responsible pet owner but why should she be rewarded for doing what she's supposed to do? No-one forces anyone to own a dog. What next, rewarding smokers who dispose of cigarettes correctly?!

If it encourages dog owners to pick up dog eggs then fine. Seems pretty gimmicky though.

What about horse riders who's horse empties its bowel all over the pavement or road. Are they to be prosecuted?

I was under the impression that picking up after your dog was a LEGAL requirement. Otherwise, there wouldn't be a fine for those who don't.
The reward surely is not getting fined and knowing that you are a responsible law abiding citizen?

I think its a good idea the reason for that is I am so sick of people who let their dogs fowl and who think they are too posh to pick it up! my kids have to walk along those pavements that the locals let their dogs fowl on I have contacted the council regarding the fowling matter they came out stuck stickers everywhere but the main culprits kept their off the school run for a short while whilst they were about and once all went quiet again their dogs were back to fowling the pathways we walked up the street just on Saturday in the snow pulling my children on sledges had to stop because of the big pile of poo left right in the middle its not funny I own two large dogs myself and clean up behind mine so why cant they do the same it infuriates me as they do it right outside mine and then passing people must think its my dogs!im tempted to go pick it up and dump it back on their door step I feel that strongly about it the worst I ever had was when I took the baby car seat out the car and put it on the floor whilst I reached back into the car for something only to realise I placed it in dog muck it really is disgusting

This is the most rediculous thing I have read over the last couple of days, and there have been some pretty poor "snow disruption" stories. Why have these people been rewarded for picking up their own pets waste?? Surely, this is to be expected, yes I get paid for doing my job, however, I certainly don't get any extra incentives if I did something I was expected to do. Paw show (see what I did there??!!) No wonder Newport hasn't got any money, we are wasting it on things such as this.

Stick my name down for the rewards scheme. I could pick up after the lazy owners who just stand there watching their dog fouling. I could easily make £100 a day working from home.
