PONTYPOOL is hosting a 10km run in aid of St David’s Hospice Care next month.

The event will take place on February 24, starting at 10am in Pontypool Park.

Participants will run from Pontypool to Mamhilad and back along the Monmouthshire to Brecon canal towpath.

Registration will take place at Pontypool Active Living Centre.

The charity said the last two years have proved successful – attracting more than 200 runners each time, with last year’s event raising approximately £3,500.

Pontypool and District Runners will support this year’s event by providing marshals and helping with the organisation.

Race director Christine Vorres said: “The Pontypool 10KM home run is a lovely course.

“Beginners enjoy the atmosphere and scenic stretch along the canal, whilst more experienced runners can challenge themselves on a course that has downhill, uphill and flat stretches.”

Last year’s race was won by Chris Carpanini in a time of 33 minutes and 31 seconds.

The first lady home was Gemma Jones, of Lliswerry Runners, in 42 minutes and 15 seconds.

The event costs will be covered by sponsors, so all money raised will help fund free hospice care in the community.

The Pontypool 10KM is being held one week before the charity’s Newport Half Marathon. The entry fee is £12 and entries will be accepted on the day. Enter in advance at stdavidshospice care.org Call Christine Vorres on 01633 851050 for details.
