USK has been selected to represent Wales in the Britain in Bloom UK Finals 2013.

The town is one of 80 finalists and is nominated in the Large Village category.

It is one of only three Welsh towns, cities or villages in the 80 finalists - alongside Colwyn Bay and Prestatyn.

Wales nominated Usk to the UK stage of the competition following regional and national judging last year.

The town was selected for its outstanding commitment to environmental responsibility, community participation and gardening achievement.

In July and August this year, Usk’s green-fingered volunteers will be showing off their commitment to a cleaner, greener Britain, by taking the Britain in Bloom judges on a tour of local projects and initiatives in a hope of winning gold.

Tony Kear, 46, Usk in Bloom chairman, said: “We were delighted to win last year’s Small Village category in Wales in Bloom for the 31st year in a row.

“We also had the highest marks in every category.

“I’m over the moon for all the volunteers, businesses and everybody involved in helping us.”

Andrea Van Sittart, head of regional development at Britain in Bloom, said: “I’d like to wish every volunteer from Usk the very best of luck.”
