Newport incinerator plans look to be finished Newport incinerator plans look to be finished

VEOLIA looks all but out of the running for a multi-million project to burn waste from five Gwent authorities at Llanwern Steelworks.

Prosiect Gwyrdd has announced that it recommends that Viridor, which is is building an incinerator in Cardiff, is the preferred bidder for the scheme.

The decision has to be ratified by the five authorities, including Newport, Monmouthshire and Caerphilly, that are behind the non-recyclable waste plan.

If it goes ahead it will mean that thousands of tonnes of waste from the three Gwent authorities will be burned in Cardiff rather than buried.

Let Cardiff have it, after all they've got everything else : just like London is for England, Cardiff is like a cancer at the heart of the nation that attracts all the investment.
With any luck they'll get the dioxins and other toxic byproducts of the combustion falling on the Senedd as well to help balance the deal.
It's truly shocking the way Cardiff gets every penny of new money in South Wales.

Short-sightedness on the part of NCC I'm afraid who refused planning permission, whereas CCC allowed and building has already started in cardiff.

volunteer groups would have lobbied pretty hard against this development. perhaps on the net big planning decision, the pro development side should try to get their arguements heard

Incorrect. They are extreamly efficient and produce almost zero emissions. THey produce far less poultion then landfill and conventional power stations such as Uskmouth. THey also reduce lorry and duscart movement. If it had been located in Newport the waste could have been taking straight to the incinerator

I like to think that in this modern day of health and safety and EU regulations that there would be no way they could build an incinerator without it being almost 100% safe, especially when it is place in or next to residential property.

On the subject of green issues, I thought Newport readers of the Argus might be interested to know what the illustrious Member of Parliament for Newport West, Paul Flynn, this week called the Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Ed Davey.

"A preposterous buffoon".

I could not have put it better myself Mr Flynn.

Of course, Mr Berco did not like it.

You can read it all here.

Oral Answers to Questions
Energy and Climate Change.

House of Commons. Thursday 31 January 2013. Column1031.

Topical Questions.

T5. Paul Flynn (Newport West) (Lab):

In 1976, the Flowers commission said that it would be irresponsible to proceed with generating electricity from nuclear power without a policy on the disposal of waste. The policy then was to dig a hole and bury the waste in it. The policy now is to do the same thing, but we no longer have a hole since Cumbria county council turned down the planning permission yesterday. Will this preposterous buffoon of a Minister of State try to answer one question and say whether it is still irresponsible to proceed without a solution to deal with the waste?

Unforunately should you be concerned with 'product of combustion' then the safest area will be from the direction of the prevailing weather which coming from the west means most vunerable will be the areas east of Cardiff - Newport!
