Lorry stuck under railway bridge in Maesglas, Newport causes traffic delays

STUCK: The lorry under the bridge on Cadiff Road in Measglas, Newport this morning STUCK: The lorry under the bridge on Cadiff Road in Measglas, Newport this morning

A LORRY stuck under a bridge on Cardiff Road caused disruption to traffic from around 9.20 this morning.

The articulated lorry was partially lodged under the railway bridge which crosses the road near the junction with Bideford Road in Maesglas.

Queues of traffic built up in both directions before the vehicle managed to free itself and reverse away from the bridge.

The driver is course to blame but with so many of these collisions in Newport I fail to understand why Vehicle Actuated Low Bridge Warning Signs have not been installed. They work in a similar way to the LED signs that light up to show your speed as you approach. If the sensor picks up an overheight vehicle an illuminated sign will warn the driver to turn back or divert.

It is not only the motorist that gets delayed when these collisons occur; railway passengers can also be held up if a rail bridge requires a safety inspection.

This place has always been known locally as the Three Bridges although there is only one left now. It has been a hazard to high sided vehicles for decades and I believe there is a sign with the hight limits displayed. The bridge does not carry passenger trains so they won't be delayed. Usual answer is to let the tyres down on the vehicle and reverse it out.

The bridge DOES carry passenger trains!

It's part of the Cardiff to Ebbw Vale line.

Thats a new one on me, times have changedI
I remember it more as the road into the Ebbw loco sheds more than anything else but never for passenger trains. Played for many hours up on the embankment as kid, marvellous place for wild strawberries, lizards and slow worms.

How did they get employed with the Argus!

It wasn't for for their spelling!

I'm not sure that is particularly relevant. It was the driver who crashed, not the company.
