Have your say on Torfaen's place names

TORFAEN council is holding a consultation about places names within the borough.

As part of the standardisation of Welsh language place names within Wales, which is being carried out by the Welsh Language Board (WLB), the council is asking residents if they use bilingual or Welsh names for English language place names in the borough.

The council is consulting on the following place names: Cwmfields, Cwmoody, Cwmynyscoy, Fairwater, Greenmeadow, Griffithstown, Lower Race, Mamhilad, New Inn, Northville, Oakfield, Old Furnace, Sebastopol, Snatchwood, Southville, Springvale, St Dials, Thornhill, Tranch, Upper Race, Varteg and Talywain.

Any suggestions would need to be evidenced before the names are adapted, to prove they are in common use.

To have your say before February 28, go to mysay.torfaen.gov.uk or write to Welsh place name consultation, Floor 5, Civic Centre, Pontypool, Torfaen, NP4 6YB

What a complete and utter waste of time and money!!

In the last census in 2011, a total of 75,993 people out of a population of 87,844 over the age of 3 stated that they had NO skills in Welsh.

In the current economic climate, Torfaen Council are struggling to provide even basic services.

Why then are they looking for translations of place names from English to Welsh, with all the cost that a consultation, new street signs, etc will bring?

Keep the names as they are and spend the money on fixing potholes instead!!
