PUPILS walking to their Monmouthshire primary school had to look twice when their head teacher became a lollipop man for the day.

Jon Murphy, 54, who has taught at Llanfoist Fawr Primary School, near Abergavenny, for the past year donned his high-visibility jacket and lollipop stick to escort his pupils safely across the road when the regular lollipop lady Sarah Edwards was unwell last week.

Mr Murphy, who believes he could be the only head teacher in the county to step into the role, also performed the role when he was head at Usk Primary School.

He said: “On the rare occasion that Ms Edwards is unable to attend I’m happy to take on the role.”

Mr Murphy says it also enables him to monitor car speeds in Gypsy Lane.
