FAMILIES from across Gwent got into the spirit of Shrove Tuesday, with pancake themed events taking place across the county.

Bedwellty House in Tredegar held a family pancake activity day yesterday and on Monday.

The Big Pancake Party gave children of all ages the chance to find out about where the tradition of pancakes came from, to experiment with their own pancake fillings and try their hand at tossing their own pancake.

Families were invited to go along and take part in a range of pancake-themed activities, including painting pancakes with edible paint, pancake arts and crafts, pancake flipping games, and pancake storytelling.

Meanwhile, at the Kingsway Centre in Newport, Mark A La Carte, the mad chef, entertained families by juggling eggs while on a unicycle.

Mark Bant, the entertainer for the day, said: “It’s been really busy so far, and of course it’s kicking off a whole week of themed events and workshops here at the Kingsway to celebrate Shrove Tuesday and Valentine’s Day.

“There’s been a lot of manic food fun, from teaching the kids plate spinning to juggling balloons.

“Basically it’s the Kingsway Centre’s way of thanking the customers, and a great start to the week.”

The Kingsway Centre is holding a Valentine’s Day card-making workshop today from 11am.
