Brynglas school merger off but closure still on the table

PROTEST: Parents had protested at Crindau Primary School against merging the school PROTEST: Parents had protested at Crindau Primary School against merging the school

A GWENT council is pushing ahead with plans to shut a school but has dropped plans to merge it with another.

Bob Bright, leader of Newport council, has decided to start a formal consultation on closing Brynglas Primary School but has ceased work on combining it with Crindau Primary.

It follows a consultation on the latter idea. A council report said an overwhelming number of objections were recieved to the merger plan and the impact it would have on Crindau.

But now with numbers at Brynglas significantly smaller than when the consultation started, it is thought the the number of pupils can be accomodated in schools in Shaftesbury and Malpas.
