STAFF at a Republic fashion store face an uncertain future after the chain collapsed into administration.

The Leeds-based retailer employs 2,500 staff and has 121 stores, including one shop in Gwent at The Mall, Cwmbran.

The group has faced stiff competition from rivals including Primark and H&M and was hit by a “sudden and rapid decline” in sales at the end of January after poor trading results over the autumn.

Republic could become the latest casualty on the high street after HMV, Jessops and Blockbuster announced shop closures.

Accounting giant Ernst & Young were appointed administrators today.

They have made 150 employees redundant at the Leeds head office.

Administrator Hunter Kelly said: “We will continue to trade Republic, with a view to selling the business as a going concern.

“The brand Republic is well recognised, particularly in the North.

“It has a powerful website offering, owns well-known brand names, and has some very attractive and profitable stores.’’
