Newport kiosk on the move to avoid roadworks

ON THE MOVE: Jon Powell, owner of the Kiosk on High Street, Newport ON THE MOVE: Jon Powell, owner of the Kiosk on High Street, Newport

AFTER being besieged by maintenance works a Newport newsagent is on the move to help keep his business alive.

The Kiosk Newsagents on High Street in the city centre has been surrounded first by gas works in the area and again recently as work continues on revamping Newport Market.

Jon Powell, who runs the Kiosk, said: " There's normally a lot of people walking past me in the day and I rely on that footfall.

"There are some regulars who would climb over fences to get to me, and I'm really grateful to them, but in general I need a lot of people to walk past me because obviously not everybody who walks past will buy something."

So Mr Powell was delighted when the council told him yesterday he would be moved to a temporary facility in Westgate Square, close to Natwest bank.

"The council have put me right in the footfall down there so that was good of them, and the shop although temporary will be similar to mine now.

"I will be there until they finish the market redevelopment, so around June, July time, but when I move back I will have a an actual shop unit at the new entrance to the market which pretty exciting really."

The Kiosk will be in Westgate Square from Sunday February 24.

It's a pity the council don't think about the poor traders inside the market whose footfall is now pityful especially in The Upstairs Gallery area where the footfall is almost zilch, two more Gallery traders closed in the last couple of weeks. But the council don't give a **** about them, it looks like they would like the whole Gallery empty for some reason !!!!
